The Mach 2 Forza is a newly introduced shape in Volair’s thermoformed line, featuring a widebody design that is shorter and wider than other popular shapes. It is paired with a longer 5.5″ handle, which provides additional leverage for power and spin. This combination is a smart decision by Volair, as longer handles are often overlooked in favor of shorter ones. The Mach 2 Forza is available in 14mm and 16mm thicknesses, and after testing both paddles, the reviewer will discuss their performance and highlight the differences between widebody and elongated shapes to help users determine the best option for their needs.
Volair Mach 2 Forza 14mm
$179.99
The Mach 2 14mm paddle initially offered more control and less power than expected. It felt firmer and generated less power on serves and drives compared to the 16mm version. However, adding weight improved power and pop. The paddle is quite light stock, which affected its performance and stability, but adding weight resolved this issue. With added weight, the 14mm paddle provided more pop on counters and drives, although resets were slightly less solid than with the 16mm version. The paddle had a stiffer feel but still offered a softer and pleasant touch compared to other 14mm paddles. The thinner core provided extra speed at the net, making it suitable for counters and hand battles. The 14mm paddle had a lower ball trajectory, resulting in lower drives and drops but with a higher chance of hitting the net. The widebody design improved the sweet spot and stability, making the paddle forgiving and accessible. Maneuverability was excellent, and the paddle exhibited impressive spin capabilities. The longer handle facilitated two-handed shots and provided increased power and spin. Overall, adding weight made the paddle suitable for all-court play, but without the added weight, it lacked the power and pop required for an all-court paddle.

I’m categorizing this one as a control paddle. This is the first thermoformed paddle that I’ve played that qualifies for the category. All the other 16mm thermoformed paddles fall into the all-court category. There are a couple of unique ways this paddle hits that differentiates it from the rest of the pack. 1) It has a much lighter static weight and swingweight than the other elongated thermoformed paddles and 2) it doesn’t have that patented stiff feel that all the other thermoformed paddles have. It’s actually soft feeling and offers good control.
Although it has a softer touch it still feels responsive and isn’t overly plush like the orignal Joola Ben Johns paddle. I think a lot of people who didn’t like the original Ben Johns paddle will like this one. However, if you’re coming from the original Ben Johns, the Perseus feels so much lighter and the plowthrough isn’t the same so don’t expect the same paddle that you had before.
The paddle is packed with all the latest technologies so you get the big spin and added stability but without the extra weight we are seeing from other brands. If you’re looking for a paddle full of tech need something that is lighter weight, then this is a good option.
