About Pickleball Effect

What Pickleball Effect Is

Independent Pickleball Paddle Reviews Backed by Real Testing

Pickleball Effect was created by me, Braydon Unsicker, to help players cut through the noise of paddle marketing with honest reviews, measurable testing, and real on-court experience.

What started as a curiosity around paddle performance quickly turned into an obsession with understanding how paddle construction, weight distribution, surface texture, and core technology influence the way paddles actually play.

Today, I independently test pickleball paddles and gear using in-house performance data and long-term play testing as a competitive 5.0 athlete to help players find the right gear for their game.

Whether you’re searching for your first paddle or your next one, learning about paddle technology, or trying to understand how swing weight affects performance, my goal is simple:

Help players make informed buying decisions through accurate, trustworthy information.

HOW WE ARE DIFFERENT

Why Pickleball Effect Exists

The pickleball paddle market continues to grow and evolve quickly. New paddle launches happen almost weekly. Brands make massive claims about power, spin, control, and “game-changing” technology. At the same time, many large review sites simply recycle manufacturer specs or publish generic affiliate content without meaningful testing behind it.

Pickleball Effect was built to be different.

I’m not a large media company or a review farm chasing clicks. I’m a real player who genuinely loves the sport and spends countless hours on court testing gear.

The goal has never been to push hype or convince players they need a new paddle every month. It’s to help players better understand equipment and make smarter buying decisions with information they can trust.

Our philosophy is that paddle reviews should be:

  • Independent
  • Transparent
  • Human-tested
  • Data-backed
  • Focused on helping players, not selling hype

Our Testing Process

How We Test Paddles

Every paddle featured on Pickleball Effect goes through a combination of lab-style measurement and real on-court testing done by Braydon.

Our in-house testing includes:

  • Swing weight, twist weight, and balance point measurements
  • Power, pop, and RPM testing
  • Surface grit durability testing
  • Technology analysis through paddle X-rays and tear-downs

Multiple on-court play and drill sessions to determine:

  • Performance profile
  • Feel and feedback
  • Sweet spot behavior
  • Break-in behavior over time
  • Customization needs
  • Comparisons against competing paddles across the market
  • Player fit

Unlike many review sites, we do not rely solely on manufacturer specs. Every paddle is measured using our own testing equipment and methodology.

As paddle technology evolves, we continue expanding our testing systems to better understand how paddles actually perform.

Braydon Unsicker

What started as a hobby reviewing pickleball paddles in 2020 unexpectedly grew into a full-time career by 2024.

Since then, Braydon has become one of the most trusted independent voices in pickleball gear through his reviews, podcast, product development, and contributions to modern paddle analysis. He helped popularize concepts like twist weight as a performance metric and created the term all-court paddle within the review space.

Beyond reviews, Braydon also helped popularize paddle weight tuning in pickleball by introducing the first tungsten weighted tape rolls as a nontoxic alternative to lead tape, which later evolved into a full line of Pickleball Effect paddle tuning products.

More than anything, Pickleball Effect has always been built around a genuine love for the sport and helping players enjoy the game more through equipment that fits their style and needs.

How We Make Money and Stay Independent

Transparency Matters

Pickleball Effect is independently operated and supported through affiliate revenue — meaning we may earn a commission if players purchase products through our links or use our discount codes — as well as the sale of Pickleball Effect paddle tuning products we’ve developed. This helps fund paddle testing, content creation, tools, and the time required to properly evaluate equipment.

Many brands also send us paddles and gear to test, and affiliate commissions can vary from brand to brand. However, none of those things influence our reviews, rankings, or recommendations.

To maintain editorial independence and full control over our opinions, we do not accept paid-for reviews, paid rankings, or paid placement anywhere.

Our philosophy is simple:

  • Brands do not pay for reviews or mentions
  • Brands do not pay for rankings or awards
  • Brands do not pay for placement on our lists
  • Reviews are based on real testing and gameplay experience
  • We regularly recommend lesser-known brands when performance justifies it
  • We openly criticize products when we believe criticism is warranted
  • We represent players, not brands

At the end of the day, Pickleball Effect only succeeds if players trust our recommendations and continue coming back for honest information. If someone buys a paddle because of our recommendation and it truly fits their game, helps them play better, and makes them enjoy pickleball more, that’s a win for everyone involved. That long-term trust with players will always matter more to us than keeping brands happy.
