SLK is Selkirk’s budget friendly or mid-market brand. Despite it being their budget friendly brand, there’s lots of interest in the Halo series because their newly signed top female pro, Parris Todd, plays with the Halo XL Control. The SLK Halo series features the popular raw carbon fiber surface and gives you the spin and feel that so many people love about them at a much lower price than their competitors that feature very similar paddles.

Selkirk offers the Halo paddles in two different shapes and thicknesses. The Control Max version has a thicker 16 mm core and a standard shape to give you an oversized sweet spot and extra control to pair with the natural high spin potential of its raw carbon surface. It’s suited well for players looking for the best control and spin paddle they can find under $150.

Our Review

With the SLK Halo paddles costing $140 compared to similar raw carbon paddles from their competitors that cost $30-$60 more I had one big question. How do they compare? If they play the same or similar then great, you can save a few bucks and pick one of these up instead. I found that they do perform well and play similar to the more expensive models from other brands. The only difference is that the Halos have a little less spin and a little less power. But the difference is pretty marginal.

The SLK Control Max is their standard shape and it has a great combo of spin, forgiveness, and control. It has a very soft, plush feel to it that makes it easy to control the pace of the ball and reduces pop ups. My thirds and dinks felt great. The connection between the paddle and ball is there. 

On the attacking side the paddle is pretty soft and doesn’t generate a ton of power for you. My serves and drives felt a little weaker. However, its high spin potential gave you some offensive options when attacking at the net with roll volleys and speed ups. 

If you have the budget, this paddle is easily one of the best control paddles under $150. Plus, you don’t see many good spin paddles under $150 so it’s nice to see one come to the market. 

The only thing I didn’t like about them was that the handle on Max was just a little too short for me and the handle on the XL is just a little too long for me. Additionally, the grip circumference sizes are different. They run big on the control versions and thinner on the power versions so that’s something to pay attention to.
