Gearbox has earned a lot of respect in the pickleball world with their quality and innovative performance level paddles. The CP7 is one of their intermediate level paddles that was given just as much attention as their performance level paddles. The paddle offers good power, a textured surface, decent feel and a lot of good looks. For the player who wants a quality elongated paddle but is still budget friendly, this is a good option.

For some reason you don’t see many elongated paddles in this price range so it’s nice to see one at the $100 price range. The Gearbox CP7 rivals our competitors high end honeycomb paddles in overall performance, design, and craftsmanship, all for a fraction of the price. The CP7 is individually handcrafted starting from the core to the most outer surface plies allowing Gearbox engineers to build a more precise, advanced structure. This paddle features a carbon fiber and glass fiber face with a polypropylene honeycomb core. True to Gearbox’s high quality signature and promise to always achieve excellence, this paddle will deliver outstanding control, power on demand and give you the best overall value for its class.

Our Review

There aren’t many elongated paddles or long handled paddles around $100 so it’s nice to find a good elongated paddle in this price range.

The Gearbox CP7 plays well above its price point and offers easy access to power and has the feel of a quality polymer paddle. The extra reach it offers and the bit of pop it gives you enables your offense and allows you to be aggressive when attacking. Its thinner core and lighter weight make it very maneuverable and quick in your hands. This was a big asset in hand battles and when I was scrambling for the ball. It has a ton of spin out of the box, but the grit does wear down fairly quickly and the spin level drops a little but I still felt it was giving me above average spin. Probably because the paddle is thinner and lighter which made it easier to accelerate through the ball to add spin.

It has a medium soft feel to it that makes it easy to dink with. It does have some pop to it so drops and resets take a little longer to get down but it doesn’t take long to adjust to it. This is an all-court paddle that leans towards the power side so it offers more offensive features than control but the control wasn’t bad. It was much easier to control this one than a true power paddle like a Selkirk Power Air or something. When it comes to forgiveness, its thinner core and elongated shape brought that down a little but not so much that it effected my game a ton. However, if you’re looking for a huge sweet spot then this won’t do the trick for you.

I compared this paddle head to head with the Joola Hyperion CAS 13.5mm paddle that retails for $160. The two paddles look very similar on paper but I actually like this paddle more. The CP7 was more forgiving and offered a little better feel to me. So, like I said, plays above its price point.

The bottom line: The Gearbox CP7 is a quick, elongated paddle that gives you some offensive options but doesn’t sacrifice all its control and feel. Its value is high considering it’s only $100.

Manufacturer Warranty

Gearbox paddles are guaranteed against workmanship and manufacturer defects for the lifetime of the paddle. The warranty is not transferable after registration and only applies to the original owner. 

What is not covered by the warranty? 

  • Normal wear and tear, abuse and negligence. This includes the grip, edge or edge guard and face materials.
  • Any modifications made to the paddle.
  • Fading of graphics.
  • Hitting other objects (other than the pickleball) such as the ground or other paddles (this can weaken the paddle or loosen the trim).
  • Not being the original purchaser.

Gearbox holds the sole discretion to determine whether a damaged paddle is covered under warranty. Replacement paddles are not covered under warranty.
